How to Get Your First 10 B2B Customers (When You Have Zero)

Zero customers is a specific, solvable problem, and it's not primarily a marketing problem. Founders in this position often default to spending on ads, content, or a website redesign before they've done the one thing that actually gets the first ten customers: direct, manual outreach to a tightly defined set of people who already feel the problem acutely.

Why paid marketing rarely works before customer 10

Paid acquisition and content marketing are amplification tools. They work by taking something that already converts, a message, a landing page, a sales conversation, and putting it in front of more people. With zero customers, you don't yet know what converts. Spending on distribution before you have a working message just gets you more people bouncing off a page that hasn't been proven yet.

The sequence that actually works

What changes once you have geography in the mix

If your addressable market spans multiple regions, say Europe, the Gulf/GCC, and North America, the temptation is to spread the first outreach thin across all of them at once. Resist it. Pick the region where you already have the strongest personal network or the clearest evidence of the problem, close the first handful of customers there, then use that proof to expand deliberately into the next region rather than diluting a small effort across too many time zones at once.

This is also where the AEO/SEO side compounds the manual work rather than replacing it: a site with clean structured data, direct FAQ answers, and specific proof points becomes citable by AI answer engines the moment a prospect anywhere, Zurich, Doha, Singapore, starts researching the category, so the manual outreach and the findability work are building the same asset from two directions.
